It is also a stand alone program where the selections can be saved as a Transparent PNG file. So the Sumatran Tiger (from the Smithsonian Zoo in Washington, DC) above was my first attempt using the program – I used it as a plugin in Photoshop, which is how I have always used it.

Update: There is a new update out, Version 1.0.2 – if your software does not indicate there is an update, go to the site and download the latest version. I stand corrected – this is not a free update for past owners – not sure why since the product is very similar to the original – apparently they are giving past owners a discount.

But, for complex masking, I still like the precision of OnOne’s Mask Pro tools and color selection controls.This week Topaz (for website see sidebar at my Tidbits Blog) unleashed their newest in their lineup of AI products by updating the old Topaz ReMask to Topaz Mask AI. I will continue to use ReMask for quick masking. If you like Topaz products, you should register for their email newsletter. Topaz offers a trial version of ReMask on their site and several videos explaining the process. It also is only $70 for both a 32-bit & 64-bit versions. So what do I think about ReMask? For quick masking, you may find this program very helpful. Since ReMask does not alter the Image Layer itself, you can now make additional changes to the Mask Layer. Now, in the Actions palette, run the Action called Process. In the Layers palette, you need to click on the image itself. However, the final Action needs to be applied directly to the Image and you will still have the Layer Mask active. With all the prep completed in Step #3, it is now time to generate the mask. The remaining white area will be protected. With the gray border in place, fill the area to remove with pure black. This will create the primary area for ReMask to process. Now, just draw on the edge of the object covering both the part to keep and the part to mask. Select the Brush Tool with a size appropriate for the subject matter and change the brush paint to a medium gray (R102/G102/B102). Draw around the object in a medium gray, fill the area to remove with pure black Topaz will then duplicate the image on a new layer, add a layer mask and start you in masking mode.ģ. Highlight this action and click the Play arrow. The first Action will say Before Masking. With the image open in Photoshop, go to the Actions palette and find the Topaz Mask folder.

Second, you will need to install these Actions manually from the “Load Action” drop-down menu in the Actions Palette. Windows: C:\Program Files\Topaz Labs\Topaz ReMask\Actions Mac: HD->Application Support->Topaz Labs->Topaz ReMask->Actions As part of the installation, ReMask will create a new folder for its Actions. The installation of ReMask is a two-step process:įirst, you run the install for the plugin. Basically, you create a quick Mask using Photoshop’s tools and then activate Topaz ReMask through a set of Photoshop Actions to perfect the mask without leaving Photoshop. Topaz ReMask is something very different. It provides great control and becomes intuative after a while. When is a Photoshop plugin not a plugin? When it really controlled by a set of Actions. NOTE – Topaz Labs has completely reworked Remask.
